my obsession with ancestry.com

based on the amount of time I spend on the internet doing research on things non-school related, my career of choice should probably be a research librarian or a historian.

In October of this year, I discovered ancestry.com, and I fell in love. I know a little about my ancestors, but even with ancestry.com it’s really hard to know anything pre-Ellis Island, where my last name was changed. (Fun experiment, type Raffalow into google or facebook. yeah, all those hits are either my father, my aunt, me, or my mom - or people who work for my dad and have him under employer….. I will be the last Raffalow on earth eventually.)

In one word, ancestry.com is the shit. Check out this 1920 United States Federal Census. It shows that my maternal grandmother, Hannah Sobel (she later in life changed her name to Honey, legally… part of the reason why I love her so much), was five-years-old, and it lists her mother, father, and sister, and their birthplaces. It also shows their native language and current job. Note that her father, Sam Sobel, was an “Egg candier” and worked at an “Egg Store”. What? I don’t know. I legit tried to figure out what an egg candier was for so long, but I gave up and imagine that he made sweets out of eggs….yeah. That’s just SO COOL. My great grandfather worked at an Egg Store, thank you ancestry.com.

PS. Censuses are not the only things on ancestry.com. They’ve also got draft cards, social security records, telephone number indexes, voting lists, etc. Overwhelming at times, but so helpful if you are looking for long lost ancestors.

i like this website, most of the time. they get a little too into analyzing the “insecurities” of rappers, and for that, they need to find a new word. but some of the posts are hilarious. be sure to look at the “filed under”. gets me every time.
